Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) formalizes the practice of systems engineering through the use of models. This class is directed at individuals who are new to Model-based Systems Engineering (MBSE) with SysML, and is intended to answer the why, what and how of MBSE using SysML.

The class is organized into Session 1 and Session 2 over two days. Participation in Session 1 is strongly recommended for those students who wish to participate in Session 2. During Session 1 on Sunday May 20, the instructor provides background and motivation for transitioning to MBSE from a document centric approach to systems engineering, and then provides an overview of how SysML is used to represent systems, and an overview of a MBSE method to specify and architect systems.

During Session 2 on Wednesday May 23rd, the instructor delves into SysML language concepts, and provides basic tool instruction to guide students through the development of a model of a simple system using Cameo Systems Modeler.

The SysML model is a graphical model of the system that captures the system requirements, behavior, structure, and parametrics, and is not an analytical model like Simulink that produces analysis results. However, the SysML model can be integrated with analytical models.

After an organization makes the decision to adopt model-based systems engineering (MBSE), it must go a long way before this decision proves right. There are many obstacles in this way, like stories about unsuccessful MBSE applications, insufficient information on how to proceed, and employee resistance to the cultural change to name a few. Neither of them is a true issue, if suitable enablers for MBSE adoption are chosen. Nowadays, MBSE is enabled by Systems Modeling Language (SysML). However, SysML is neither a framework nor a method: it provides no information about the modeling process and thus must be combined with some methodology to become truly applicable.

This tutorial introduces a new approach for MBSE, called MagicGrid. The MagicGrid framework consists of viewpoints and aspects organized in a grid view, where each cell describes one or more artifacts to deliver throughout the modeling process. The approach is based on experience of various MBSE adoption projects, existing studies in the field, and real-life findings in models’ management at different systems engineering domains.

Tutorial is followed by hands on exercise, where every attendee takes part in developing a sample system model from A to Z by applying the MagicGrid approach.

The tutorial provides a foundation on how to create precise models that can be executed using Cameo Simulation Toolkit plugin. The tutorial is very practical – it is driven by a sequence of hands-on assignments based on an educational case study model, which explains and composite system structural semantics and demonstrates how build behavior models (state machines, activities) and execute them. Attendees will also learn how executing models can help to better understand and communicate models, debug complex behavioral models, create functional system prototypes, verify requirements, and perform various kinds of engineering analysis.

This tutorial is well balanced covering major capabilities enabling you to apply models execution for any systems in the future. Tutorial is intense, but all participants will follow through. For the tutorial we will require Cameo Systems Modeler installed on your machine. To save time please download and install demo version from www.nomagic.com/products/cameo-systems-modeler in advance.

Do you use the industry-leading model execution capabilities provided by Cameo Simulation Toolkit (CST)? Do you love being able to simulate systems using state machines and activities? But, on the other hand, do you dread the complexity of using activity diagrams to code really detailed behavior? Or do you get annoyed by having limited access your model state if you use a scripting language instead? Now there is a solution! The Alf Plugin gives you the ability to use the OMG-standard Alf action language to write expressions and behaviors in models executed using CST. Alf is a textual language with a familiar Java-like syntax, but it is designed specifically to be used in the context of graphical, executable UML and SysML models. Indeed, behind the scenes, Alf is actually compiled into UML activity models, which are then automatically integrated into your overall model, so they can be seamlessly executed using CST. This tutorial will give you an introduction to the Alf language, instruction on how to install and use the Alf Plugin with CST, and a chance to try it out hands-on. You will be amazed at how much quicker and easier it is to write three lines of Alf code, rather than create by hand an equivalent activity model of 20 or more elements!

Time: 8:30 am - 5:00 pm
Room: Watters A

The objective of this tutorial is to provide a top-level overview of the Fourth Edition of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Systems Engineering Handbook, the basis of the INCOSE certification exam. Participants will learn how the handbook can be used to plan, manage, and realize complex systems within the context of demanding business constraints. Participants will be introduced to key Systems Engineering terminology, concepts, and principles in the handbook, answering questions such as:

  • What is Systems Engineering and why is it important?
  • What are the key Systems Engineering processes in the SE Handbook?
  • How does the material in the SE Handbook related to MBSE and SysML?

Practical information and tools will be provided and the participants will complete several team-based exercises to solidify the concepts being presented. Each student will receive a complete set of lecture notes and an annotated bibliography. INCOSE members can download a free copy of INCOSE SE Handbook. Copies of the handbook will also be available for purchase at the NMWS registration desk.
