Approaches to Marking and Validating Sensitive MBSE Models
In some industries like the defense industry, there are special processes in place for the marking and handling of sensitive information. Many in the defense industry are familiar with processing classified and other controlled information. And therefore, there are well understood processes across the industry for identifying and handling sensitive information in documents. However, Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) introduces new challenges as models have unique qualities that separate them from traditional documentation. One challenge is that models can have hidden information that make it difficult for the reader to identify its sensitivity. Another challenge is that models can be integrated together which can create the potential of sensitivity aggregation (i.e., where two non-sensitive items become sensitive when combined together). The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory has done some research in developing custom tools to address some of these challenges. The idea is that if modeling tool can warn the modeler of potential sensitivity concerns, then the modeler can take the appropriate action before a mistake is made in handling the information. This presentation discusses some of these challenges and showcases some of these tool concepts.
